Beware of fake payment letters sent to trademark owners

Published

Because trademark and patent applications are published in public bulletins, applicants’ details can be seen by anyone. Some individuals and companies use this information to request payment through letters, e-mails or phone calls that appear to come from an official authority or an attorney.

How can you tell?

  • The letter contains terms such as “registration”, “record” or “international publication”, but payment is requested not to an authority but to an account you do not know.
  • You are pressured to hurry: phrases such as “if you do not pay today, you will lose your right” are used.
  • It comes not from the attorney handling your file but from someone you have never heard of.

What should you do? Consult the attorney handling your file before making any payment. For transactions requiring payment, Kupon Patent first sends a contract or an information letter; it does not request payment by phone. If anything seems suspicious, you can reach us at 0507 373 25 26.
